Stirling Duathlon 2011
Well that’s the first club race of the season over and done with and another great turn out from the club. It was great seeing plenty of our club colours on display. We had Tina, Rab, Alan & Alasdair taking part in the sprint distance and Mandy, Andy, Richard, Acky and Colin taking part in the big one; all the guys done the club proud. It was also great seeing some of our northern friends down, Niall Malone and his cameraman in particular, doing their bit as well as some long lost faces on display; welcome back Darren Crumpton. Once again Colin’s long suffering wife got up at the crack of dawn on a Sunday morning to support the club… thanks again Carol!
First to the Sprint distance; The club was brought in by Alan, aka sicknote, who turned up for this one and done us proud. A cracking time and some excellent splits saw him come in 1:33:15. He wasn't happy though and reckons he can and should be quicker- go on Alan. Next home in his debut duathlon was Alasdair in a time of 1:36:42; a great time despite his pre-race nerves. Not far behind was the shadow of his former self, Rab, in a great time of 1:37:58 and looking at his splits he is improving hand over fist this year- well done coach Bob. Again not far behind that was our new president, Tina, in a time of 1:43:27. Tina was her usual enthusiastic self and supported the rest of the club members as well as posting good times herself, another that is going from strength to strength.
To the main event then, the Scottish Duathlon Championships. To say there were some flying machines taking part is putting it mildly. However we had our own two flying machines on display in Andy and Richie; it was nip and tuck last year for most of the prizes and this year has started in the same manner, with less than 20 seconds splitting them after a 10k run, 40k cycle and 5k run. Andy finished in 2:12:09 and Richie in 2:12;28- looking forward to the competition this year guys. A special mention to Ricj who posted the second quickest T2 of the day; a pretty nifty 20 seconds! Next in was the irrepressible Acky in a very good time of 2:21:36- another who was looking strong. Next home for the club was our very own super woman Mandy in a superb time of 2:25:03 to once again place highly in the female vets class. Any of you girls who think they are going to get trophies from her this year had better think again. Last but by certainly no means least was Colin in a time 2:38:57, and although slowest of the longer race was still 7 minutes quicker than planned… not too bad when you take into account the injury sustained early in the race (just look at the grimacing in some of the photos for proof)!
We must also make a special mention for former member Darren who came in a very respectable 2:26:57, and to Richie’s mate from Aberdeen, Niall, who made it round in a personal best of 02:07:18- well done to both.
Well done to all who attended the day and made it another success at Stirling.
A quick Mention about Monikie Winter series; despite being hit hard by the snow over the past few months several of the club members were able to bear the cool temperatures and record good times- check them out below along with a few pictures (it was honestly much colder than it looked)!
For now though onwards and upwards to East Fife for a Sprint Tri.
See you all there,
GRC Tri
